10:00 AM – A Ghost Story: Recovering Wreckage with the NTSB

Location: Vintage Hangar
Presented by David Case

On December 15, 1944, big band leader Glenn Miller took off from England on his way to France into a dark and cloudy night and disappeared over the English channel. No wreckage was ever found. On December 15, 2022, precisely 79 years later, an airplane took off from Maui on its way to the Big Island into a dark and cloudy night and disappeared over the Alenuihāhā Channel. The wreckage was recovered. NTSB vehicle recorder specialist David Case will give a talk about recovering wreckage from a mile deep in the ocean, the data found from a camera recovered from the wreck, spatial disorientation, and Glenn Miller. Case is a Computer Engineer with the Office of Research and Engineering for the National Transportation Safety Board. This forum is available for FAA WINGS credit.

Prop it right and save a life! Dion Carr, A&P/AI assisted by his wife, Mary Carr, will demonstrate the safe way to hand prop an aircraft engine. 11:00 AM – Flying with Pets

Location: Vintage Hangar
Presented by Dr. Rosemarie Williams and Eric Jones

Pilots are often animal lovers and if they are not, they have a friend or family member who is. Whether you have an interest in rescue flying or fly with your pets, this session is for you! Presented by Dr. Rosemarie Williams, DVM, who is a cat specialist and has a PhD in neuropathology, and Eric Jones who is a dog lover, school teacher, and bus transportation professional. Dr. Williams has transported thousands of cats, as well as sea turtles and even a day-old foal, and Eric is a fanatical dog rescue flyer who has transported hundreds of dogs for Pilots & Paws. They join their skills and experiences to offer you the unique needs and planning for safety and comfort of both pilots and animals. Both will discuss ways to help animals be happy and unstressed in flight, how to work with shelters (including the pre-flight question list to avoid unpleasant in-flight surprises), and how to load them (i.e. crate management). Dr. Williams will discuss the physiology, psychology, and neuro-cognitive sides of animals in transport, including effects of altitude and CO toxicity in various animals. Eric will briefly discuss tax deduction implications of use of your plane or a rental plane, and various non-profits including his regular beneficiary, Pilots & Paws. Brought to you by the Comanche Type Club! This forum is available for FAA WINGS credit.

12:00 PM – 5:00 PM – Type Clubs

Type Clubs can help save you money, keep you from making mistakes others have already made, show you how to restore, maintain and fly your airplane – in short, they can provide the equivalent of many years of hard won experience at a very low cost!
